Board Effectiveness – NHS Arm’s Length Body

The unitary Board of this NHS Arm’s Length Body (ALB) had worked hard to develop the organisation’s strategy and build delivery capability to ensure it added optimal value to the NHS. There had also been several changes in Board membership and the Chair was keen to discover how the Board viewed its own development since the previous external Board review three years earlier.

We interviewed each executive and non-executive member of the Board and selected other members of Board sub-committees. We also observed a full Board meeting and key Board sub-committee meetings.

The Chair and Chief Executive found the Board review a very valuable process both in terms of confirmation of the Board’s progress and recommendations for continuous improvement, and also in terms of useful insights to inform the subsequent five year strategy refresh.

The Board chose to publish the Board review with Board papers and were pleased with the approach and outputs of the review overall.

"The Chair and Chief Executive found the Board review a very valuable process."
